Howard Thurman was an influential American author, Christian mystic, philosopher, theologian, pastor, educator, and civil rights activist. He cofounded the first major interracial, interdenominational church in the United States. Thurman’s theology of radical nonviolence shaped a generation of civil rights activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., and continues to inspire people to work for justice and to be grounded in contemplative practice.
